My husband and I live in Northeastern Vermont. After the death of a long time companion dog , we got our first Lab. He is a wonderful guy, and that led me to the online Labrador Retriever communities. More and more I got interested in rescueing Labs, and other dogs that were left in shelters to die. These dogs all need homes, they are the throw aways of our society . Eventually I found Acme Pet Transport, and volunteered my services in whatever way could be of help.
Now, we are the proud owners of 2 purebred Labs and 2 Lab mixes. Three of our 4 are rescued dogs. I wish I could save them all, .... in the mean time, I will do what I can to help animals in need, get to their forever homes, no matter how many miles are in between. My motto, is "Never say never...." Melissa

My husband and I live in North Carolina, where we enjoy camping, hiking, 4-wheelin' and never-ending DIY projects. We wanted a dog who could share in our adventures and, after camping with some friends and their two rescued dogs, knew adopting a shelter pet was the only way for us.
We adopted our lab mix, Java, through a local rescue group in November, 2003. We kept in touch with her foster mom and when she told me about two puppies someone had found by the side of a busy road in an ice storm, I knew we could do something to help.
We fostered those two little girls for a very sleepless week and were relieved and overjoyed when they both found new moms at the Adopt-a-thon that Saturday. We knew we couldn't keep them all, but we now had a way to help homeless animals one (or two) at a time. |
In researching training on dog-related internet sites, I found out about Shadow's transport to a 'forever home' with Claire. I was amazed and thrilled that complete strangers across many states would rally together to get a homeless animal to a good home. When Claire then announced that she was starting up the Acme Pet Transport forum, I offered to help in any way I could. We foster and transport when we can, but I feel that I can make the most difference through outreach and sharing information.

Let's see........ how I became involved in this great site! I was on a lab related site, and saw Claire's posting that she needed drivers to get her new lab mix, Shadow, home. I volunteered to help transport Shadow, and the rest is history. I had never heard of transports before Shadow's and was amazed at this network of people who wanted to help save the animals. I actually drove about 3 hours from my home to get Shadow and help drive her on her journey. I was in love, both with the adorable puppy who now was getting a new life, and with transporting knowing I just helped save a life.
My husband, daughter, 2 rescued dogs, and 2 rescued cats live in upstate NY. We fostered dogs for a local rescue until we adopted our second lab who is very under-socialized. Now we are spending more time on training both of our dogs, and hope to continue fostering as her confidence builds. Promoting fostering is something I am very passionate about. The more foster homes there are, the more animals that can be saved from untimely and often cruel deaths. I strongly feel it is important to drive, foster, and volunteer with reputable groups who have the same beliefs as you. If you would like any information on what it is like to foster or transport - both the good and the bad - please contact me.
Now go jump in at the site and say hello!

I am owned by three Aussies.and pretty much everything in our household revolves around them. (I typed that so they'd leave me alone for a while.they were hovering). All three are rescues-two from ARPH (Aussie Rescue and Placement Helpline), and we (the dogs and I) make it our goal to help as many other rescue dogs as we can. We live with Nick (husband, bill-payer and the "Most Wonderful Person in the World"-according to Inara) and The Cat, AKA Thorn...a petite little tortie that accepts all dogs into her house, but detests cats.
The dogs and I can be found playing flyball most weekends; sometimes other doggy events-K-9 Disc, agility, or just doing doggy stuff (I however do not partake in sniffing butts like they do). I help rescue efforts by transporting and writing rescue-friendly articles.and the dogs help me by being Rescue Goodwill Ambassadors in public and at ARPH booths, by being at my side on transports and by generally going with the flow when it comes to my rescue efforts.

Catherine - Lead Transport Coordinator
I happened upon AcmePetTransport in 2004 when Melissa (aka Barngoddess) posted a link on another message board. I started my AcmePet "career" with a transport and overnight of a German Shepherd puppy, a heartworm positive hound, and a little mini dachsund who thought she was tougher than the big boys. I was hooked. Shortly after that I volunteered to coordinate my first transport. Now you can find me coordinating transports or spending time with my menagerie in Ohio. My husband and I currently share our little farmette with our son, Samuel, five dogs, three cats, two horses and five fish. We may just have to get a bigger place if we keep up with this rescue business. If you're considering volunteering but don't know exactly what you can do, drop me an email...I'll put you to work right quick.

My husband and I live in northwest Ohio with our "only child" our 8 year old German Shepherd! Last year I came across the "Transport" section of Petfinder and volunteered for my first transport in January of 2004. I had always wanted to be involved with animals and never realized until last year that there was such an animal rescue transport network out there!
Shortly after my first transport, I was involved in driving Hazel (now re-named "Shadow") to Claire! Last year when Claire asked if I'd like to join her newly formed Acme Pet Transport, I accepted the invitation and have been associated with Acme ever since!
In my free time I enjoy playing the piano, swimming, bowling, riding my motorcycle, the outdoors and time at home! One of my unusual talents is that I can write normally with my right hand and simultaneously write backwards, in other words, a mirror image with my left hand!
